NCGA Hall of Fame Class of 2026: Harvie Ward Leads a Bay Area–Heavy Group
The Northern California Golf Association has named its Hall of Fame Class of 2026, and three of the four inductees come out of Bay Area golf: E. Harvie Ward, Condoleezza Rice and J. Stuart Francis, alongside Sacramento native Charles Schwab. The NCGA announced the class on July 1, 2026.
Why this matters in San Francisco
Ward is the name that lands hardest here. The NCGA calls him "the greatest amateur player in the world during the 1950's," and the résumé backs it: an NCAA title, the 1952 British Amateur, the 1954 Canadian Amateur, and back-to-back U.S. Amateurs in 1955 and 1956 — a sweep the association labels the "Am-Slam." He did most of that winning as a San Franciscan, out of the Olympic Club and the San Francisco City Championship. We told his story in full in Harvie Ward: San Francisco's Adopted Amateur Great.
Rice and Francis extend the Bay Area thread in the other direction — not players produced by the region's courses, but people who have shaped the modern game from here. The Class of 2026
E. Harvie Ward — the late NorCal amateur great, winner of the NCAA title, the 1952 British Amateur, the 1954 Canadian Amateur and the 1955 and 1956 U.S. Amateurs.
Condoleezza Rice — a fixture at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and, per the NCGA, a global ambassador for the game. She was among the first women admitted to Augusta National in 2012, supports the Augusta National Women's Amateur and the Drive, Chip and Putt finals, and has directed Stanford's Hoover Institution since 2020.
J. Stuart Francis — a Bay Area business figure and former USGA president who steered the association through the COVID-19 pandemic, pushed to elevate its national championships (women's events in particular), backed the modernization of the Rules of Golf, and identified the USGA's current CEO.
Charles Schwab — the Sacramento native whose firm has been the PGA Tour's official investment firm since 1997 and title sponsor of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club and the Charles Schwab Cup on PGA Tour Champions.
What we still don't know
The NCGA has not yet announced a date or a venue for the induction ceremony — its announcement says only that more information is coming. We will update this post when the details are published.
