Course History
San Jose Country Club traces its roots to 1899, making it one of the oldest golf clubs in Northern California. The present 18-hole course was laid out in 1912 by Tom Nicoll, a Scottish-born professional who served as the club's first head pro. Over the following decades the layout was refined by a series of noted architects, reflecting the evolving craft of golf course design in the region.
Renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast contributed renovations in 1936, and John Harbottle III updated the course in 1997. This layering of design work over more than a century has preserved the club's classic feel while keeping the course a genuine test for modern players.
The Design & Architecture
The course is a hilly, tree-lined layout carved into the foothills above the Santa Clara Valley. Its defining feature is a set of small, heavily contoured rye-grass greens that demand precise approach play and a deft touch around the putting surfaces. Though modest in yardage, the elevation changes and strategic bunkering give the design its teeth, embodying the old-style, shot-making character that has defined the club for generations.
Playing the Course
Measuring roughly 6,225 yards from the Blue tees to a par of 70, San Jose Country Club may look short on the scorecard, but the hilly terrain makes nearly every hole play longer than its stated length. Success here comes from positioning off the tee, controlled iron play into the tiny greens, and a sharp short game. A practice facility with a driving range helps members warm up before tackling the demanding contours.
