Overview
Rancho del Pueblo Golf Course is a compact, walkable nine-hole executive layout tucked into the Little Portugal neighborhood in the heart of San Jose, California. Owned by the City of San Jose and operated as a public facility, it sits immediately adjacent to San Jose Municipal Golf Course near Oakland Road, making the two courses convenient neighbors for local golfers. Playing to a par of 28 over eight par-3 holes and a single 250-yard par 4, Rancho del Pueblo is designed to entertain and challenge both beginners and experienced players while keeping rounds quick and affordable.
With three lakes, extensive bunkering, and a well-maintained set of greens, the course packs plenty of shot-making variety into a small footprint. Its brisk pace of play makes it ideal for a lunchtime nine, an after-work loop, or an introduction to the game for new and junior players.

Course History
Rancho del Pueblo occupies the site of the former Thunderbird Golf Course, a privately operated facility that ran from 1965 until June 1997. After the land came under the City of San Jose, the property was redeveloped into a modern municipal short course, and Rancho del Pueblo opened for play in 2000. From the outset the facility was conceived as a community-focused course, emphasizing accessibility, affordable rates, and player development.
That mission earned national recognition: the course received the 2007 Player Development Award from the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). Rancho del Pueblo has also been recognized as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through Audubon International for its environmental stewardship.
Design & Architecture
The course was designed by the respected firm of Robert Muir Graves, ASGCA, and Damian Pascuzzo, ASGCA. Rather than treat an executive layout as an afterthought, the architects gave Rancho del Pueblo genuine design character: three lakes come into play, and the greens are protected by extensive bunkering that rewards precise iron play. Eight of the nine holes are par 3s, complemented by a lone 250-yard par 4, so nearly every tee shot is a test of distance control and accuracy rather than raw power.
The result is a course that beginners can navigate comfortably while still giving low-handicap players a meaningful short-iron challenge, especially when the pins are tucked behind water or sand.
Playing the Course
Rancho del Pueblo offers two sets of tees. The Black tees stretch the layout to 1,418 yards, while the forward Gold tees measure 1,122 yards, keeping the course approachable for juniors, seniors, and newer players. The par-3 holes range from a short 86-yard wedge at the second to a demanding 194 yards at the sixth, so a full bag of short and mid irons gets a thorough workout across the nine.
Because the round is short and the layout compact, pace of play is quick, making it easy to squeeze in nine holes during a work break or before running weekend errands. A driving range, putting green, and chipping green round out the practice facilities, and the clubhouse offers a well-stocked golf shop along with snacks and beverages.
