Course History
Los Lagos Golf Course opened for play in 2002 as part of the City of San Jose's effort to expand quality, affordable public golf while preserving sensitive open space along Coyote Creek. Built on land adjacent to the creek near the corner of Capitol Expressway and Tuers Road, the project was conceived from the outset as an environmentally responsible municipal facility.
In the years after opening, the course earned recognition for its stewardship, including designation as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its habitat protection and sustainable maintenance practices. It has remained a centerpiece of San Jose's public recreation offerings ever since.
The Design & Architecture
The layout was designed by Mike Poellot and Brian Costello of JMP Golf Design Group in Belmont, California. The architects carefully integrated the course into the natural habitat surrounding Coyote Creek, creating enhanced setbacks to protect the sensitive riparian environment. The result is a routing that weaves through wetlands, water features, and native landscaping, balancing playability with conservation.
Playing the Course
Los Lagos offers a scenic and varied round with views of the surrounding hills and Coyote Creek. Water hazards, bunkers, and well-kept fairways and greens come into play throughout the 18-hole layout, presenting a fair but engaging test for golfers of all abilities. On-site practice facilities and a welcoming clubhouse round out the experience, making it a popular destination for both local players and visitors to the Bay Area.
