Course History

Spring Valley Golf Course dates back to 1956, making it one of the longstanding golf destinations in the greater San Jose and South Bay region. Set on the eastern edge of Milpitas where the valley floor gives way to the Diablo Range foothills, the course was built by Ray Anderson and has served generations of Silicon Valley golfers as an accessible daily-fee facility. Over the decades it has remained a locally cherished spot for both recreational rounds and instruction, and it continues to earn recognition in the community, including being named among the best in the valley by local media.

The Design & Architecture

Designed by Ray Anderson, the layout is a classic mid-century parkland routing that makes clever use of its rolling foothill setting rather than overwhelming length. At just over 6,100 yards to a par of 70 with a rating of 68.8 and a slope of 114 from the tips, Spring Valley rewards accuracy and course management over raw power. Bermuda grass fairways and greens, mature trees, doglegs, and strategically placed water and sand bunkers frame the challenge. A collection of picturesque par 3s, demanding par 4s, and a couple of reachable par 5s gives the round rhythm and variety, while the elevation changes deliver attractive hill views throughout.

Playing the Course

With four tee sets ranging from roughly 5,600 to 6,139 yards, players of all abilities can find a comfortable and enjoyable challenge. Higher handicappers will appreciate the forgiving landing areas and manageable overall length, while better players are tested by the doglegs, water carries, and well-guarded greens that place a premium on precise iron play. Beyond the 18 holes, the facility supports practice with a 22-stall driving range, two practice putting greens, and a dedicated short-game area with a practice bunker, making it a strong option for a full day of golf or focused game improvement.
