Course History
Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park opened in 1968 as the municipal course for the City of Napa, occupying a scenic stretch of Kennedy Park beside the Napa River. It was designed by the notable pairing of Jack Fleming, designer of the celebrated Lake Course at The Olympic Club, and Bob Baldock, one of the most prolific post-war course architects in the western United States.
Over the decades the course has matured into one of the Napa Valley's dependable public plays and has hosted qualifying rounds for prominent events, including the Kaiser Invitational and U.S. Open qualifying. Today it remains a community centerpiece, operated as a public facility and recognized for its environmental stewardship as a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
The Design & Architecture
The Fleming and Baldock design is a traditional, walkable layout that routes through the gradual elevation changes surrounding the estuary of the Napa River. Mature trees line many of the fairways, and water comes into play on the majority of the holes, framing approach shots and rewarding accuracy. Despite the abundance of water, the course features only a couple of true forced carries, keeping it fair and playable for golfers across a wide range of abilities.
Playing the Course
From the Black tees the course stretches to 6,681 yards with a rating of 72.8 and a slope of 131, providing a solid test for stronger players. Four sets of tees, down to roughly 5,660 yards from the forward markers, let golfers of every level find a comfortable challenge. With water in play on most holes and gentle contours throughout, thoughtful course management and steady ball-striking are rewarded more than raw length.
