Course History
Las Positas Golf Course opened in 1966 as a municipal facility serving the growing Livermore Valley and the wider East Bay. Built to a design by Robert Muir Graves, it has long anchored a 27-hole complex that also includes a shorter nine. Over the decades the course has been maintained as an accessible, affordable public venue, and it underwent major renovation work in the 2011-2012 period that refreshed its playing surfaces and infrastructure while preserving the character of the original layout.
The Design & Architecture
Robert Muir Graves, a UC Berkeley-trained landscape architect and ASGCA member who worked on hundreds of courses across the West, laid out the Signature course to take advantage of the valley's gently rolling terrain. His routing features stylized bunkering, smooth undulating greens, and a variety of hole lengths that reward thoughtful positioning off the tee. Mature trees and a handful of water features add definition and strategic interest without overwhelming mid- and high-handicap players.
Playing the Course
Playing to a par of 72 over roughly 6,723 yards with a rating of 72.4 and a slope of 130, the Signature course offers a fair but engaging test for all abilities. The layout is highly walkable, and its blend of open landing areas and well-guarded greens gives better players a chance to score while keeping casual golfers comfortable. Multiple tee options let groups match the challenge to their game, and the year-round Northern California climate means play is available in nearly every season.
