Course History

Las Positas opened in 1966 as a municipal golf course serving Livermore and the greater Tri-Valley area. The original 18-hole regulation layout was designed by Robert Muir Graves, a prolific Northern California golf architect known for shaping affordable, playable public courses throughout the region.

The facility has grown into a 27-hole complex over the decades and underwent major renovation work completed around 2011-2012, which added and reworked several holes on the main course, rebuilt tee boxes, and improved drainage, cart paths, and landscaping. A separate nine-hole course rounds out the property.

The Design & Architecture

Robert Muir Graves laid out a classic parkland-style course that stretches to about 6,723 yards from the tips at par 72, carrying a course rating of 72.4 and a slope of 130. Water is a defining feature: ponds come into play on several holes across the front nine, while a creek winds through and crosses a number of holes on the back nine. Mature trees, gentle elevation changes, and a few tricky doglegs give the back nine added character, and multiple tee sets let players of varying abilities find a comfortable challenge.

Playing the Course

The front nine is relatively flat and plays out in front of you, but the water hazards demand accuracy off the tee and into the greens. The back nine is the more interesting stretch, with the creek, added trees, subtle elevation shifts, and doglegs that reward thoughtful shot placement. The greens are consistently praised by returning players, making Las Positas a rewarding and enjoyable round for both locals and visitors.
