Course History
The course dates to 1947, when it opened as the Pittsburg Golf and Country Club with a nine-hole layout. San Francisco-based golf course architect Jack Fleming, a longtime associate of the legendary designer Alister MacKenzie, laid out that original nine, which later became the back nine of the eventual 18-hole course. In 1991 the facility was expanded to a full 18 holes and operated as Delta View Golf Course.
Facing declining rounds, an aging clubhouse and pro shop, deferred maintenance, and mounting costs, the City of Pittsburg closed the course in 2018. Local officials at the time expressed hope of preserving or reopening the site, but the course did not return to operation as a golf facility.
Design & Architecture
Jack Fleming's original nine used the natural roll of the hillside property, reflecting classic Golden Age routing sensibilities carried over from his work with Alister MacKenzie. When the course was expanded to 18 holes in 1991, the new front nine was designed by noted California architect Robert Muir Graves.
The combined layout featured elevated tees, undulating greens, numerous dogleg fairways, and mature trees. Those features, together with the rolling terrain, made the course play longer than its 6,317-yard scorecard suggested. Fairways and greens were planted with ryegrass.
Playing the Course
At par 71 and about 6,317 yards, Delta View offered a moderate-length test with a course rating of 71.3 and a slope of 133 from the back tees. The doglegs, elevation changes, and undulating greens placed a premium on shot placement and course management rather than raw distance. Panoramic views of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and Mount Diablo were a hallmark of the round. The facility included a driving range, practice putting and chipping areas, a pro shop, and a clubhouse with a bar and grill.
