Course History

Oakhurst Country Club opened in 1990 as the centerpiece of a residential community in the Mount Diablo foothills east of the San Francisco Bay Area. Its debut earned immediate recognition when California Golf magazine named it the "Best New Course in Northern California." In the decades since, the club has operated as a private, non-equity country club. In 2018 the facility was acquired by private ownership, and in early 2024 Troon was selected to manage the club's golf and hospitality operations, bringing continued investment to the course and clubhouse.

Design & Architecture

The course was created by Ron Fream and the design team at his firm Golfplan, including Ross Forbes, Fred Bliss, and David Dale. Fream routed a links-style layout that blends into more than 360 acres of rugged natural terrain, lakes, and protected wetlands. The design leans on the natural elevation of the Mount Diablo foothills to create numerous uphill and downhill shots, while water and native areas frame many holes. Greens are well-guarded and demand precise approach play, and the closing stretch builds to a finish that reviewers frequently rank among the best in California.

Playing the Course

At 6,746 yards from the Black tees, playing to a par of 72 with a course rating of 73.4 and a slope of 145, Oakhurst is a demanding but fair test. Multiple tee options range from roughly 4,085 yards up to nearly 6,750 yards, allowing the course to accommodate a wide range of abilities. Elevation changes, forced carries over wetlands, and firm links-style conditions place a premium on club selection and course management. The par-4 18th, played back toward the clubhouse, is the signature closing test and a highlight of any round.
