Boundary Oak opened in 1969 and quickly established itself as one of the premier public golf destinations in the East Bay. Developed by the City of Walnut Creek as its municipal course, it was laid out on rolling terrain at the base of Mount Diablo and has served generations of local players in the decades since.

Today the city-owned facility remains a classic, mature parkland track. It has earned a steady following among Contra Costa County golfers and has been recognized among the better public courses in the region, a reputation reinforced by its long-standing conditioning and its accessible, welcoming atmosphere.

The Design & Architecture

The course is the work of noted golf architect Robert Muir Graves, whose design routes 18 holes through the natural contours of the Mount Diablo foothills. Graves used the site's rolling topography and mature stands of oak to shape a layout that rewards thoughtful positioning off the tee, while the greens are known for subtle level changes and pronounced borrows that place a premium on reading the surface. At roughly 7,100 yards from the tips, the par-72 design carries a course rating of 73.8 and a slope of 134, making it a substantial challenge from the back markers.

Signature Holes

Boundary Oak's par 3s are the course's early and late highlights. The 2nd, playing 181 yards from the black tees and about 160 from the blues, drops to a green that runs quickly from right to left - the smart miss is short and right, where the up-and-down is most manageable. On the way home, the 17th is the sternest one-shotter on the card, stretching to 220 yards from the tips.

The finisher is the hole most players remember. The 18th is a 529-yard par-5 dogleg left where a tee shot leaked to the right can take par off the table; the hole concludes on a green that tilts from back left to front right, a touch gentler than the slick putting surfaces that open the round.

With multiple sets of tees, Boundary Oak plays comfortably for higher handicappers while still stretching to a genuine test for stronger players. Fairways wind through tree-lined corridors with the ever-present backdrop of Mount Diablo, and the quick, undulating greens demand focus on approach shots and around the putting surfaces.
