Course History
Canyon Lakes Golf Course opened in 1987 as part of the residential development that grew up along Bollinger Canyon in San Ramon, quickly becoming one of the Tri-Valley area's popular public golf destinations. The course was laid out by Ted Robinson, Sr., a prolific American golf architect whose work spanned hundreds of courses across the western United States.
The property was purchased in 2015 by Don Naumann, a veteran of the golf industry, who invested in course improvements and a renovated clubhouse. In 2017 the ownership added an on-site craft brewery, giving Canyon Lakes its claim as the first championship 18-hole golf course and brewery in the country and cementing its identity as both a golf and social gathering spot.
The Design & Architecture
Ted Robinson, Sr. was renowned for his artful use of water and landscaping, and Canyon Lakes reflects his signature style. Routed through a hilly canyon setting, the par-71 layout weaves among mature trees, lakes and creeks with meaningful elevation changes from tee to green. At roughly 6,373 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 71.8 and a slope of 133, the design places a premium on shot placement and course management rather than sheer distance, with tree-lined corridors and well-bunkered, undulating greens defending par.
Playing the Course
Golfers will find a fun but demanding test that suits a range of abilities from the multiple tee sets. Accuracy off the tee is rewarded, as errant shots can find trees, water or the surrounding hillsides, while the greens ask for a deft touch. Walking is permitted on weekdays and carts are available. After the round, the on-site brewery and scratch-kitchen restaurant make the 19th hole a genuine highlight, with 18 taps of house-brewed beer overlooking the course.
