Course History

The West Course at Blue Rock Springs traces its origins to 1941, when it was laid out by Jack Fleming and Joe Mortara Sr. As a municipal facility serving the city of Vallejo, it has long been a cornerstone of public golf in the Northeast Bay, offering accessible, affordable golf to the surrounding community for generations.

In 2006, the course underwent a significant renovation reported at roughly $1.5 million, with noted golf course architect Robert Muir Graves enhancing the design. The updates modernized the layout while preserving the traditional feel that has defined the West Course throughout its history.

The Design & Architecture

The West Course reflects a classic, traditional design sensibility, shaped first by Jack Fleming and Joe Mortara Sr. and later refined by Robert Muir Graves. It is distinguished by tree-lined fairways, inviting greens, and a number of gentle elevation changes that follow the natural contours of the terrain above Vallejo. At about 6,014 yards to a par of 71, the layout emphasizes accuracy, shot placement, and course management over sheer length, rewarding players who position themselves well off the tee. The course is maintained with Poa annua greens and a rye/Bermuda mix on the fairways.

Signature Holes

The West Course's most memorable holes make full use of the property's elevation. The 4th, a 314-yard par 4, plays sharply downhill — golfers describe a drop of more than 100 feet from tee to fairway — with water left of the landing area and a creek wrapping around the green. The downhill 15th, a 179-yard par 3, is a clubbing puzzle: there is more room short and right of the green than appears from the tee, and picking the correct club into the flat putting surface is critical.

On the back nine, the 306-yard 13th tempts big hitters to go for the green. It plays downhill — and often downwind — to a large putting surface that slopes left to right, but the fairway kicks left just before the green and out-of-bounds runs down the left side. The sternest test on the card comes earlier: the 6th, a 518-yard par 5 from the Blue tees, carries the course's No. 1 handicap rating.

Playing the Course

With a course rating of 69.1 and a slope of 128, the West Course offers a fair but engaging test that suits a wide range of skill levels. The tree-lined corridors and elevation changes present a handful of genuinely challenging holes, while the moderate overall yardage keeps the round enjoyable and playable for higher-handicap golfers and beginners alike. Scenic views of the surrounding hills add to the appeal of a round here, making it a well-rounded municipal option for casual and dedicated players.
