Alister MacKenzie designed Cypress Point and Augusta National. He also designed a municipal golf course in Pacifica where anyone with a tee time and a green fee can walk the first tee — and on Sunday, September 13, the San Francisco Public Golf Alliance is holding its 12th annual tournament to keep it that way.
The Alister MacKenzie Tournament is a foursome team scramble at Sharp Park Golf Course, gross scoring, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The sign-in desk opens at 7:00 a.m. with coffee and breakfast bags. Entry is $300 per player, half of which is tax deductible, and it covers a hot breakfast, a post-golf buffet lunch, a no-host bar, and a tee prize.
You don't need a foursome. The Alliance is explicit about it: singles and partial groups are fine, and they'll build you a pairing.
Every dollar goes to the Alliance's campaign to save public golf and public courses in San Francisco and the Bay Area — which, for Sharp Park specifically, has meant the better part of two decades of legal and political work to keep a MacKenzie original in public hands and open for play.
