Course History

The Fleming 9 was added to the interior of the Harding Park property in 1961 and takes its name from Jack Fleming, the former San Francisco city golf caretaker whose stewardship shaped the municipal courses of the era. For decades it has served as a beloved local layout for beginners, juniors and golfers seeking a quick round. Following the 2020 PGA Championship hosted at the main Harding Park course, the Fleming 9 underwent a roughly 60-day re-grassing project that reseeded the course with ryegrass, and it reopened to the public in mid-November after the renovation.

The Design & Architecture

Routed within the interior of the larger Harding Park layout, the Fleming 9 is a par-30 design built around six par-3s and three par-4s. It places a premium on correct club selection and accuracy rather than raw distance, with mature trees and tight corridors demanding precise iron play. The longest hole is the par-4 opener at 405 yards, while the collection of par-3s tests a golfer's short-iron and wedge game across a variety of yardages.

Playing the Course

At just 2,165 yards from the member tees and 1,865 from the forward tees, the Fleming 9 plays as an approachable, walkable loop that can be completed in a fraction of the time of a full 18. Its abundance of par-3s makes it a favorite for practice, family golf and newer players, while more experienced golfers can sharpen their short game and scoring. Combined with the on-site driving range, it rounds out a full day of golf at one of San Francisco's iconic municipal venues.
