Course History
The golf course at Moffett Field opened in 1959, the same year that Captain Arthur S. Hill served as the base's commanding officer; in his honor the original, notably flat layout was known as the "Hill Course." It began as a nine-hole venue and was expanded to a full 18 holes roughly a decade later.
Over the years the course has been operated by the Navy, the Air Force, and NASA, reflecting the changing stewardship of Moffett Field itself. Today it operates as a public course under professional management, welcoming players from throughout the Bay Area.
The Design & Architecture
The course was designed by veteran California golf architect Bob E. Baldock, who laid out a largely flat, walkable routing across the airfield grounds. Kikuyu grass covers the fairways and roughs while the poa annua greens are widely regarded as among the best-conditioned putting surfaces in the region. A later renovation by architect Algie Pulley, completed in 2009, refreshed the layout while preserving its approachable character.
Playing the Course
Playing to a par of 72 and measuring about 6,572 yards from the back tees, with a course rating of 71.6 and a slope of 122, Moffett Field offers a fair, enjoyable test for players of all abilities. The flat terrain makes it an easy walk, and the well-kept fairways and true greens reward steady ball-striking. All the while, the surrounding mountains, San Francisco Bay, and the towering Hangar One provide a backdrop unlike any other course in the area.
