Course History
Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club opened in 1962 as the golf and social centerpiece of the Sharon Heights community in Menlo Park. Designed by veteran golf architect Jack Fleming, whose career traced back to work with the legendary Alister MacKenzie, the course wound through native oaks and gently rolling Peninsula terrain and quickly established itself as one of the Bay Area's premier private clubs, earning recognition as a Platinum Club of America.
After decades of incremental changes, the membership engaged Todd Eckenrode and his Origins Golf Design team to prepare a master plan in 2019. Construction began in April 2023 and the transformed course reopened in 2024 following an approximately 18-month, $23 million project. The renovation was named Sports Illustrated's Best Modern Private Course Renovation of 2024, and the reinvigorated club soon drew championship-level attention.
The Design & Architecture
The 2024 renovation touched every tee, fairway, bunker and green. Eckenrode rebuilt all of the putting surfaces with closely mown short-grass surrounds, rerouted several holes, and cleared many trees to open up sightlines and improve turf health. Roughly 20 acres of maintained turf were replaced with wild native grasses, California oaks and sycamores, while a new set of bunkers combines easy playability with dramatic, flashed green-side faces. Rye grass throughout the property delivers firm, true playing conditions across the year-round California season.
Playing the Course
Stretching to 6,837 yards from the back tees at a par of 72, Sharon Heights plays to a Course Rating of 73.4 and a Slope of 138, a stern but fair test for a course of its length. The rolling Peninsula terrain, restored native areas and boldly contoured, well-defended greens reward thoughtful positioning off the tee and precise approach play. Multiple sets of tees make the layout enjoyable for players of all abilities, while the firm rye-grass surfaces and green-side short grass invite creativity around the greens.
