Round Hill Country Club is a private, member-owned club set in the rolling hills of Alamo, California, in the East Bay's San Ramon Valley. Opened in 1960, its 18-hole championship course was laid out by golf course architect Lawrence Hughes and winds through mature trees and gently rolling terrain that frame views across the valley. Combined with a full-service clubhouse, dining, and social amenities, the club offers members a classic country club experience just east of the Berkeley and Oakland hills.

Course History

Round Hill was established at the turn of the 1960s as part of a planned golf-and-residential community in the hills of Alamo, with the golf course opening for play in the fall of 1960. Lawrence Hughes, a prolific mid-century golf course architect and member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, was engaged to route the layout across the property's natural contours.

Over the decades the club has grown into an established private country club serving the San Ramon Valley, pairing its championship course with a clubhouse and full slate of member amenities. The mature trees planted in its early years now define much of the course's character.

The Design & Architecture

Lawrence Hughes designed the 18-hole layout to work with the rolling East Bay terrain rather than against it, with fairways that rise and fall through the valley's gentle slopes. Mature tree lines separate many of the holes and place a premium on accuracy off the tee, while the design's classic proportions keep the par of 72 accessible to a broad range of members and guests.

Playing the Course

Measuring roughly 6,582 yards to a par of 72 from the back tees, Round Hill plays to a course rating of 72.4 and a slope of 130, a test that rewards positioning and steady iron play over raw length. The rye grass greens and tree-lined corridors ask players to think their way around, and a practice range on site lets members warm up before heading out. Elevation changes and valley views add to the experience throughout the round.
