Course description

The maintained course record, presented separately from live booking and user reviews.

Founded in 1914, its 18-hole championship course carries a rare Golden Age pedigree: it is the only known property where both Jack Neville, the original architect of Pebble Beach, and prolific California designer William Watson shaped the ground. A meticulous restoration completed in 2020 returned the layout to its historic character while modernizing it for water efficiency, making Diablo a cherished blend of classic design, natural beauty, and country-club camaraderie.

Course History

Diablo Country Club was founded in 1914 when Robert Noble Burgess transformed a 19th-century country estate at the base of Mount Diablo into a golf and country club. In 1915, a 23-year-old, two-time California Amateur Champion named Jack Neville designed his very first golf course here, laying out the original nine holes. Neville's next commission would be the now-legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links.

In 1920, one of California's most prolific Golden Age architects, William Watson, expanded the course to a full 18 holes, weaving Neville's original holes into the new routing. Watson went on to design The Olympic Club and Harding Park in nearby San Francisco. Diablo remains the only known course touched by both men. A century later, in 2020, the club completed a comprehensive restoration led by Todd Eckenrode's Origins Golf Design, an effort honored as Golf Inc.'s Renovation of the Year for 2021.

The Design & Architecture

The par-72 layout stretches to roughly 6,761 yards and plays through rolling terrain framed by mature trees and the dramatic backdrop of Mount Diablo. The 2020 restoration honored the course's Golden Age roots while modernizing it for the future: greens were re-shaped and resurfaced with improved bentgrass, many restored to their original size to recover lost hole locations, while bunkers were reshaped and shifted and natural creek ways were reintroduced. Fairways and surrounds were converted to drought-tolerant Bermudagrass, and more than 35 acres of maintained turf was replaced with low-maintenance native areas to sharply reduce water use.

Playing the Course

Diablo rewards thoughtful, strategic golf. Firm, contoured bentgrass greens demand precise approaches and a deft touch on and around the putting surfaces, while the reshaped bunkering and reintroduced creek ways ask players to weigh risk and reward off the tee. With a course rating of 73 and a slope of 135, the layout tests low handicappers without losing the classic, walkable rhythm of a Golden Age design. The hilly setting and Mount Diablo views make for a memorable and scenic round.
