Presidio Golf & Concordia Club sits within the Presidio of San Francisco, a former U.S. Army post turned national park site, and ranks among the oldest golf courses in the western United States. Established in 1895, the 18-hole layout winds through towering cypress, pine and eucalyptus, offering a quiet, tree-lined test of golf just minutes from downtown San Francisco. Once reserved for Army officers and private club members, the historic course is now open to the public and remains a treasured destination for golfers seeking history, natural beauty and a genuine championship challenge.

Course History
The course traces its origins to 1895, when golfers received permission from the U.S. Army to lay out a nine-hole course on the grounds of the Presidio, then an active military post. Landscape architect John Lawson shaped that original nine, reportedly declaring that he simply followed the natural contours of the land. Army officers and civilian members shared the course, and its popularity quickly grew.
As demand outpaced the original layout, the newly formed Presidio Golf Club secured a major renovation. In 1910, architects Robert Wood Johnstone and William McEwan added a second nine, expanding the course to its present 18 holes. For decades the course served Army officers and private members; when the Presidio became a national park site in the 1990s, the historic layout was opened to the public.
The Design & Architecture
Routed across the rolling, forested terrain of the Presidio, the 18-hole course plays through corridors of cypress, pine and eucalyptus that frame nearly every hole. The design measures 6,481 yards to a par of 72, carrying a course rating of 72.6 and a slope of 135 from the back tees, a reflection of the demanding tree-lined driving zones and elevation changes. The bentgrass greens, converted to a nematode-resistant strain to suit the cool coastal climate, provide firm, true putting surfaces year-round.
Playing the Course
Accuracy off the tee is rewarded here, as the mature trees leave little room for wayward drives, while frequent fog and coastal breezes add another layer of challenge. Despite its championship demands, the course remains welcoming to players of all levels and offers a peaceful, park-like escape from the surrounding city. Between the history-rich clubhouse, the towering forest and occasional glimpses toward the Golden Gate, a round at the Presidio is as memorable for its setting as for the golf.
