Course History

Golden Gate Park Golf Course opened in 1951 as a municipal short course on the sandy western reaches of the park, near the Dutch Windmills and Ocean Beach. It was designed by Irish-born architect Jack Fleming, who had come to California with the legendary Alister MacKenzie and worked as a construction assistant on celebrated courses such as Cypress Point, Pasatiempo, and Sharp Park. For decades the course served as an accessible, affordable place for San Franciscans to learn and enjoy the game. In 2014, a non-profit affiliated with the First Tee of San Francisco took over its operation, and in 2023 the course reopened following a comprehensive renovation led by architect Jay Blasi, cementing its reputation as one of the finest nine-hole par-3 courses in the country.

The Design & Architecture

Jack Fleming's original design made the most of the site's rolling natural sand dunes and surrounding cypress trees, creating a compact all-par-3 layout with a total par of 27. The recent renovation by Jay Blasi widened the playing corridors, rebuilt and enlarged the greens, and added multiple teeing options on every hole to introduce more variety and shot-making interest. The native sandy soil proved an ideal growing medium, allowing the greens to be built with a bentgrass blend and the tees and fairways sown with fine fescues, all without imported soil or drainage piping.

Playing the Course

With nine par-3 holes and a total of roughly 1,302 yards, Golden Gate Park Golf Course is all about precision and touch rather than raw distance. Holes call for a range of shots with everything from short wedges to mid-irons, and the firm, sandy ground rewards players who can control trajectory and use the contours around the greens. Coastal breezes off the nearby Pacific can add an extra challenge, making it an ideal setting to sharpen your short game while enjoying a relaxed, walkable round.
