Course description

The maintained course record, presented separately from live booking and user reviews.

Sitting on city-owned land, this friendly public facility pairs a compact, walkable course with a driving range, restaurant and bar, making it a favorite spot for beginners, families and golfers looking to sharpen their short game.

Course History

Montclair Golf Course opened on January 12, 1961 as a 28-acre practice complex in the Oakland Hills, originally billed as one of the most complete practice facilities in the Bay Area. Since 1980, the operation has been leased and run by the Lee family, who oversee both the golf course and the on-site bar and restaurant. Because it sits on city-owned land and welcomes all comers, it functions as a community-oriented municipal facility rather than a private club.

The Design & Architecture

The layout is a compact par-3 pitch-and-putt spanning nine holes and just 657 yards, with a par of 27. No hole stretches much beyond 80 yards, but small greens framed by mature trees punish anything hit offline, rewarding precision over power. There are no powered carts here; the routing is easily walkable, and an adjoining driving range with outdoor lighting lets players keep swinging after dark.

Playing the Course

As a short-game haven, Montclair is an ideal place for beginners to learn the game and for experienced players to dial in their wedges and putting. Rounds move quickly across the walkable nine, and the tree-lined greens offer just enough challenge to keep every shot interesting. Golf lessons are available daily, and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere makes it welcoming for players of all ages and skill levels.

Know Before You Go
