Course History

After several false starts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Mill Valley Golf Club was organized in 1919 at a meeting held at the Outdoor Art Club, beginning with 40 charter members. The 9-hole layout was pronounced fit for play on November 1, 1919, and the clubhouse opened the following year. Originally a private club, the course transitioned to public ownership during the Depression: in 1939 the club asked the City of Mill Valley to purchase and operate it, and voters approved a bond measure to do so. More than a century later, the city-run course endures as Marin County's oldest golf course.

The Design & Architecture

The original 9-hole course was laid out by John H. "Dad" Clark, a greenskeeper and professional golfer, who routed roughly 2,100 to 2,200 yards of golf through the wooded terrain at the base of Warner Canyon. The layout threads among hills, creeks, and mature redwoods across about 42 acres, with Bluegrass greens and fairways. A restoration in recent years revamped the greens and added a small practice facility, a putting green, and a snack bar while preserving the course's compact, historic character.

Playing the Course

Playing to a par of 33 over 9 holes and just over 2,140 yards, Mill Valley Golf Course is an inviting, walkable round that rewards accuracy over power. The gentle terrain, well-maintained fairways, and views of the surrounding Marin County landscape create a serene, unhurried experience. Its short length and relaxed pace make it an ideal spot for beginners, families, and anyone looking to enjoy a casual round or sharpen their short game amid the redwoods.
