Course History
Los Altos Golf & Country Club traces its origins to 1923, when a founding group led by President Charles A. Gray incorporated the club and set aside roughly 155 acres of former Rancho San Antonio land for its operations, subdividing the remainder for residential development. The Club's Articles of Incorporation are dated October 29, 1923, with its bylaws adopted the following month.
Construction of the golf course began in September 1924 and was completed by May 1925. Tom Nicoll, the club's first golf professional, served as chief architect of the original layout. The course underwent a significant renovation in 2004, and today the club marks more than a century of golf in the Los Altos hills.
The Design & Architecture
Tom Nicoll's original design is a classic, walkable parkland layout that plays to a par of 72 over 6,544 yards, with a course rating of 69.9 and a slope of 117. Mature trees line the fairways, and bentgrass greens paired with ryegrass fairways give the course its lush, well-conditioned character. The 2004 renovation modernized the course while preserving its traditional feel and the sweeping backdrop of the Santa Cruz Mountain coastal range.
Playing the Course
At 6,544 yards from the back tees, Los Altos rewards accuracy over raw length. Tree-lined corridors and well-protected bentgrass greens place a premium on shot placement and a sharp short game, while the moderate slope of 117 keeps the course enjoyable for a range of skill levels. A practice range supports warm-ups and lessons, and the rolling terrain makes for a scenic, engaging round.
