Course History
While golf has been played at Lake Chabot since the property's original 18-hole course opened in the 1920s, the shorter Par 3 (Executive) Course is a much more recent addition. Laid out by Bob Putman and opened in 2006, it was created to give players a quick, low-pressure option alongside the main course. Over the years it has become a popular spot for beginners taking their first swings, families playing together, and seasoned golfers squeezing in extra holes or dialing in their wedge game before or after a full round.
The Design & Architecture
Designed by Bob Putman in 2006, the Par 3 Course is a compact, walking-only pitch-and-putt layout. Its nine holes range from roughly 66 to 162 yards, keeping every shot within short-iron and wedge distance and putting the emphasis squarely on approach play and putting rather than length off the tee. Set into the East Bay hillside with bluegrass fairways and greens, the course pairs an approachable scale with the natural rolling terrain that defines the wider Lake Chabot property.
Playing the Course
At par 27 over roughly 1,040 yards, a round here is fast, walkable, and beginner-friendly, yet still rewarding for accomplished players who want to test their short game. Because it is a walking-only course, expect an easygoing pace and a focus on precise iron play and confident putting. With views of Lake Chabot and the surrounding hills, it is an enjoyable warm-up, a relaxed family outing, or a focused short-game practice session all in one.
