Tucked into a corner of McLaren Park in southeast San Francisco, Gleneagles Golf Course is a 9-hole public layout that has earned a reputation as one of the most demanding short courses in the country. Opened in 1962 and designed by longtime San Francisco greenskeeper Jack Fleming, the course rolls over hilly, tilted terrain with tight fairways, thick brush and small, fast greens. Course History

Gleneagles opened for play in February 1962 after a lengthy political effort to bring public golf to McLaren Park, the sprawling green space named for John McLaren, the man who developed Golden Gate Park. At the time it was among the most expensive nine-hole courses ever built in the United States, and the opening was marked by a ceremony attended by San Francisco's mayor and Recreation and Parks leadership.

The course was designed by Jack Fleming, who served as head greenskeeper for San Francisco's municipal courses for more than three decades and previously worked with celebrated architect Alister MacKenzie. That Golden Age lineage helped give Gleneagles a classic, no-frills character that endures today.

The Design & Architecture

Routed across steep, tilted terrain, Gleneagles offers hardly a level lie. Fleming laid out narrow fairways framed by thick brush and defended by small, firm greens, and the routing takes full advantage of the hilly McLaren Park landscape. The green complexes have been rebuilt with the same bentgrass varietal used at nearby championship venues such as TPC Harding Park and The Olympic Club, keeping the putting surfaces fast and true.

Playing the Course

Gleneagles is often called one of the toughest nine-hole tests in America, and it lives up to the billing. Tight, sloping fairways and quick greens demand precise ball-striking and careful course management, with the long, doglegging par-5 sixth ranking among the hardest holes in Northern California. Players wanting a full round can loop the nine twice from alternate tees to make an 18-hole day, all rewarded with expansive views of the city and bay.
