Course History

Foxtail Golf Club dates to 1963, when the South Course opened as part of what has grown into a two-course public complex in Rohnert Park. The original layout came from the drawing board of prolific California golf architect Bob E. Baldock, whose firm shaped dozens of accessible daily-fee courses across the West during the mid-20th century.

Over the decades the course has been refined, with architects Donald Knott and Gary Linn contributing to its evolution. Today the South Course sits alongside its companion North Course, giving the North Bay a longstanding, dependable public golf destination just off Highway 101.

The Design & Architecture

The South Course is a classic parkland design routed over gently rolling terrain, with mature trees framing many of the fairways and defining the lines of play. Measuring 6,492 yards to a par of 71, it is the more forgiving of Foxtail's two layouts, favoring accuracy and course management over raw length. Rye grass fairways and Poa annua/rye greens give the course a soft, consistent playing surface, while thoughtful bunkering guards approaches and rewards well-positioned tee shots.

Playing the Course

With a course rating of 71.0 and a slope of 124, the South Course offers a fair but engaging test that suits a wide range of golfers. Multiple sets of tees let players dial in the challenge, so beginners and higher handicappers can enjoy a comfortable round while stronger players work the ball into tighter, tree-lined targets. The walkable routing and player-friendly character make it a popular choice for casual rounds, leagues, and outings throughout Sonoma and Marin Counties.
