Course History
Golf at this Rohnert Park site dates back to 1974, when the property opened as part of what was then known as the Mountain Shadows Golf Resort. The original North Course was laid out by architect Roger Baird, and over the decades it became one of Sonoma County's most-played public facilities alongside its companion South Course.
In 2003 the North Course was extensively reconstructed under the direction of architects Donald Knott and Gary Linn, creating what the club describes as a completely new golfing experience. Continued investment in conditioning and course improvements in more recent years has kept the North Course a well-regarded stop for golfers touring the wine country.
The Design & Architecture
The North Course rewards thoughtful play with a good variety of holes, strategic bunkering and undulating greens. Water is a defining feature, coming into play on roughly half the holes, including a large lake shared between the 10th and 18th and a hazard guarding the left side of the opening par-5 fairway. Four sets of tees, stretching from around 5,261 yards up to 6,851, let the course flex from an approachable resort round to a genuine championship challenge.
Playing the Course
Playing to a par of 72, the North Course carries a course rating of 73.0 and a slope of 126 from the back tees, signalling a fair but substantial test for the scratch and mid-handicap golfer alike. Accurate iron play into the well-defended greens and careful club selection around the water hazards are the keys to a good score, while the multiple tee options make it welcoming for higher handicaps and newcomers to the game.
