Course History

Chardonnay Golf Club opened in 1991 as part of a golf-and-vineyard development in the hills of Jameson Canyon, just south of the city of Napa. Designed by architect Algie Pulley, the course was routed to weave among working vineyards, taking advantage of the rolling terrain, wetlands, and natural creek corridors of the property.

Over the years the layout has seen refinements, with course updates associated with Pulley and noted architect Sandy Tatum. Today Chardonnay is regarded as one of the premier semi-private facilities in the Bay Area and Napa Valley, drawing both local members and visitors exploring wine country.

The Design & Architecture

Pulley's design leans on the drama of its setting, threading fairways through roughly 150 acres of Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir vines. Numerous lakes and creek crossings introduce strategic water hazards, while elevation changes create elevated tees and downhill approaches that frame views of the surrounding valley. Portions of the property double as a wildlife preserve, reinforcing the naturalistic character of the course.

Playing the Course

Stretching to 6,948 yards with a par of 72, Chardonnay plays to a course rating of 74.3 and a slope of 133 from the tips, offering a stern but fair test for stronger players while remaining enjoyable from the forward tees. The signature 8th, a memorable par 3 played from an elevated tee, blends sweeping Napa Valley views with clever contouring that invites creative shot-making. A varied routing, fast greens, and the ever-present vineyards make for a round that is as scenic as it is challenging.
