Course description

The maintained course record, presented separately from live booking and user reviews.

Its 18-hole, par-72 championship course winds through mature, tree-lined fairways framed by sand bunkers and water hazards, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. Beyond golf, the club offers a full country-club experience with tennis, swimming, dining, and social amenities, making it a longstanding fixture of the South Bay golf community.

Course History

Almaden Golf & Country Club traces its roots to the mid-20th century, when land in the Almaden Valley was developed into a golf course designed by Jack Fleming, a Northern California architect who had earlier assisted the celebrated Alister MacKenzie on several projects. From the outset the club was conceived as a private, member-focused retreat combining championship golf with a broad slate of country-club amenities.

The layout has evolved over the decades. In 1979 the par-72 course was substantially redesigned by the team of Ron Fream, Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge, and in 2016 architect Todd Eckenrode carried out further renovation work, refreshing the course while preserving its established, tree-lined character.

The Design & Architecture

Originally the work of Jack Fleming and later reshaped by Ron Fream, Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge, the course is a classic parkland design routed through mature stands of trees. A defined cut of rough borders the fairways and numerous sand bunkers and water hazards come into play, so accuracy and shot placement are rewarded over raw power. Both greens and fairways are planted in rye grass, giving the course firm, consistent playing surfaces throughout the season.

Signature Holes

The hole members talk about most is the 6th, a short par 3 of just 146 yards from the back tees (and under 100 from the forward markers) guarded by a creek that crosses in front of the green, with bunkers ringing the putting surface to catch anything errant. Rated the easiest hole on the card, it is a genuine birdie chance — and the hole where most of the club's holes-in-one are made — but the water and sand punish a careless swing.

The sternest test comes at the 11th, a 419-yard par 4 that plays as the No. 1 handicap hole, demanding a strong drive and a precise long-iron approach. The round closes with the 18th, a 533-yard par 5 that gives longer hitters one last chance to reach in two and settle matches on the home green.

Playing the Course

Measuring roughly 6,852 yards from the back tees at par 72, Almaden plays to a Course Rating of 73.7 and a Slope of 131 — numbers that signal a genuine but fair test for the scratch and better player, with a rating slightly above par reflecting demanding tee-to-green precision. Tree-lined corridors, strategic bunkering and water hazards ask for disciplined driving and accurate approaches, while the parkland setting keeps the round scenic and playable for members of a range of abilities.
