Course History
Originally known as Pleasanton Fairways Golf Course, the facility first opened for play in 1974. Its layout is unusual: the holes sit inside the infield of the Alameda County Fairgrounds' thoroughbred racing track, giving the course a distinctive setting shared with the region's long horse-racing heritage. Over the decades it has been rebranded as the Pleasanton Golf Center, reflecting its dual identity as both a short course and a practice destination for East Bay golfers.
The Design & Architecture
Credited to architect Ron Curtola in 1974, the executive layout stretches to roughly 1,500 yards and includes three par-4 holes among a mix of shorter par-3s. The design is intentionally approachable, offering enough challenge to keep experienced players engaged while remaining forgiving for beginners and those with fewer rounds under their belt. Bermuda-grass greens and fairways suit the warm East Bay summers and keep conditions playable for the high volume of casual and learning golfers the center serves.
Playing the Course
A round here typically takes about two hours, making it easy to squeeze in nine holes during the day or after work. The compact, walkable routing rewards accuracy and short-game touch over raw distance, so it plays as much like an extended practice session as a full round. On-site the center also offers a warm-up range with elevated grass and mat hitting tees, widely regarded as some of the best grass practice tees in the East Bay, so players can loosen up before heading out.
Know Before You Go
This is a public 9-hole executive course, ideal for a quick round, beginners, and short-game practice rather than a full championship-length experience.
The course sits inside the Alameda County Fairgrounds racetrack, just off Interstate 680 and a few blocks from downtown Pleasanton's Main Street.
A grass-and-mat driving range with elevated tees is on site for warm-up and practice.
Tee times can be booked online through the center's website; plan on roughly two hours for a full nine.
